Patience Hodgson had known Alana Skyring since they were children, and met John Patterson in a drama class all three were attending to avoid physical education classes.
A month or two later after performing at a kareoke bar patience suggested they form a band, they began to play in johns garden shed .
The Grates name stuck once people started hearing them, as they were previously playing under different names.
